"Within the child lies the fate of the future"
- Maria Montessori, The Secret of Childhood
Today I took my two children to participate in the March for Our Lives rally in Jacksonville, Florida. I want my children to be true Peacemakers. But Peacemakers cannot just sit back and allow others to continue to make decisions. Especially since the people making decisions are often ignorant or simply choose to ignore the root problems of today's issues. Montessorians must lead the way to peace. We must stand up and let our voices be heard.
I offered to take my Girl Scout troop to the rally today. However, many of the girls were too afraid. Afraid they would be shot. Shot at the rally. They are middle schoolers. The idea that middle schoolers are afraid of even being in public spaces breaks my heart. As a parent, it solidified exactly why I needed to make sure my children attended. We can not live in fear. Sometimes being a peacemaker means being brave and facing our fears.
This is my daughter making signs for the rally. She was so excited when she saw all the signs around her.
The crowd was larger than I expected. There were people of all ages there. I wasn't sure how my kids would react but as soon as the speakers started, my daughter was pumped! The first speakers were local high schoolers. Although my son was a little scared of the crowd, my daughter was cheering and clapping and completely involved. It was amazing! I had to hold back tears.
Today was a good example of the way our children will lead us to a better future. We must teach them to be leaders as well as visionaries. They must research problems and solutions. They must speak out. They can do it with our help. I dream of a future led by Montessori Peacemakers.
